Waterfront Family Compound in Maine
The goal to reimagine this Maine waterfront estate was simple yet meticulous: make the new home feel as if the original house had simply been refreshed. For decades, the property held deep sentimental value for its multi-generational family but was in desperate need of updating and modernization. The new main house mirrors the original in spirit and style, yet offers taller ceilings, a slightly larger footprint, and a subtle twelve-foot shift to protect a beloved tree. Despite its size, the property retains an unassuming presence.
Several outbuildings were created for both recreation and entertainment for this dynamic family including: a large pool house, an open-air pavilion serving both the croquet lawn and tennis court, and a farm complex. Perhaps most interestingly, in the woods near the main house on the site of the owner’s childhood treehouse, stands a new playhouse which features a gym, squash court, bowling alley, and, secretly accessed through an English phone booth, a stunning bar and nightclub.
