Classically Modern in Southampton
Fitting seamlessly in one of Southampton’s historic districts, this new shingle style house with sloping gambrel roofs appears as if it has been in the neighborhood for decades. The understated scale of the house is achieved through a double story center block with one-and-a-half story wings with dormers.
While the exterior language is rooted in traditional architecture, the interiors tell an entirely different story. To better complement the owners’ contemporary art collection, the interiors are streamlined and modern. An open floor plan with free-flowing spaces and high ceilings, the rear facade includes vast steel-framed windows and glass doors that flood the rooms with light. Of particular interest is the plaster-clad spiral staircase, like a graceful ribbon sculpture.
